  • 1 Apply underpinning knowledge and skills to contemporary environmental health practice including the assessment and management of the impact of the built and natural environment on public health
  • 2 Source, critically analyse, consolidate and synthesize complex information relevant to environmental health from a range of sources
  • 3 Communicate complex knowledge and ideas relevant to environmental health practice in oral and written forms
  • 4 Apply risk management frameworks to the assessment, management and prevention of contemporary environmental health challenges
  • 5 Design, plan, implement and evaluate environmental health interventions
  • 6 Conduct environmental health practice in a legal, ethical, sustainable and culturally safe manner
  • Taught by experienced Environmental Health Officers, your studies include real world assessments that reflect the work of Environmental Health Professionals. This course includes a 2 day intensive workshop, field trips and work placements across Tasmania, giving you over 100 hours of industry experience.

    Safety in Practice Compliance

    This course includes compulsory Professional Experience Placements. You must meet the College of Health and Medicine's Safety in Practice Requirements before census date of the first semester of your course. The safety in practice requirements are completed separately to the course admission application.

    Career outcomes

    The Graduate Diploma of Environmental Health is a professionally accredited degree. Provisional accreditation has been granted for this course by Environmental Health Australia (EHA).

    In line with EHA requirements, the University will seek full accreditation once a sufficient number of students have graduated from this course. 

    Graduates may meet the requirements for membership of EHA as an Environmental Health Officer. There may be additional requirements for membership beyond the completion of the course. For further membership requirements, please visit the Environmental Health Australia website.

    This course is not currently accepting applications.

    To be eligible for an offer, an applicant will have:

    • A completed recognised bachelor degree (AQF7) (or higher award) in a health or science discipline; and
    • In addition, all applicants will have completed a minimum of 50 credit points (equivalent of one semester full-time study) of recognised basic science units that
      • Were studied at Bachelor level or higher (AQF7 of higher), and
      • Include a minimum of 12.5 credit points (one unit or equivalent) of chemistry; and
      • Include a further 37.5 credit points (three units or equivalent) in science areas (e.g. microbiology, physics, anatomy and physiology, life science).
      • These units do not have to be part of the completed Bachelor degree.

    Students who complete the Graduate Diploma of Environmental Health may receive credit for up to 100 credit points into the Master of Public Health.

    Options for this course

    This is a full-fee course, which means you’ll need to pay the full amount for your studies. Commonwealth Supported Places are not available in this course. However, there are still support options available for eligible students to help you manage the cost of studying this course.

    You may be able to fund all or part of your tuition fees by accessing a FEE-HELP loan from the Australian Government. FEE-HELP is a loan scheme that assists domestic full-fee students to pay for University, which is repaid through the Australian Tax System once you earn above a repayment threshold. This means you’ll only have to start repaying the loan once you start earning above a specific amount
