Whether you’re in the early stages of your career and wanting to further develop your clinical expertise, or moving into a role that encourages you to lead and manage, our postgraduate nursing courses and wide range of specialisations will support your goals and ambitions.
In this course you will study four units aligned with a specialisation of your choice. With over 20 options to choose from, all taught by practicing clinical experts, this offers you the first step in your postgraduate skill and knowledge development, and paves the way to further expanding your knowledge in the Graduate Diploma.
This course is offered part-time only.
Specialisation availability
Due to high demand, enrolment for some specialisations in 2025 may be capped. To maximise your chances of securing an offer, we recommend submitting your application as early as possible. Applications will be assessed on a first-come, first-served basis.
With the exception of Child and Family Health Nursing all specialisations are offered completely online. In most specialisations, you must have access to clinical practice in the specialty area.

Course objectives
The School of Nursing, in collaboration with cooperating Health Care Agencies, aims to create an educational environment which values critical, reflective thinking, life-long learning, acquisition of generic attributes and professional development.
While the Graduate Certificate specialties are diverse with course specific objectives, the generic program objectives are to:
- enable students to work as registered nurses in specialised practice settings;
- allow students to develop nursing knowledge and skills in their specialty;
- enhance students' advanced critical thinking and clinical decision making in their specialty nursing discipline;
- encourage student interest and engagement in the professional growth of their discipline, and
- develop students' ability to communicate effectively with people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

Practical experience
Professional Experience Placement and Safety in Practice Compliance – Child and Family Health only
The Child and Family Health specialisation includes compulsory Professional Experience Placements. You must meet the College of Health and Medicine's Safety in Practice Requirements before census date of the first semester of your course. The safety in practice requirements are completed separately to the course admission application.
Career outcomes
Graduates are able to further their career development throught their specialisation of choice. They can also choose to progress to a Graduate Diploma of Nursing or Bachelor of Nursing Professional Honours.
Course structure
Students are required to complete 50 credit points (cpts) from a specialisation.
Please note: the Graduate Certificate in Nursing (Rehabilitation Nursing) is not being offered in 2025.

Entry requirements
For Domestic students
Applicants must have practiced as a Registered Nurse for at least six (6) months full time equivalence since graduation from a university program, prior to start of the Course.
Applicants must provide evidence of Ahpra registration as a Division 1 Registered Nurse with no restrictions or conditions.
Midwives must have a nursing qualification to be eligible to apply.
Safety in Practice Requirements for Child and Family HealthThis course includes compulsory Professional Experience Placements. You must meet the College of Health and Medicine's Safety in Practice Requirements before census date of the first semester of your Course. The safety in practice requirements are completed separately to the course admission application.
Child and Family HealthThe Child and Family Health specialisation is placement based and is only available for nurses in certain geographical areas, specifically Tasmania and some LHD’s in NSW.
Rehabilitation Nursing
The Graduate Certificate in Nursing (Rehabilitation Nursing) is under review and is not being offered in 2025.

Articulation
The Graduate Certificate of Nursing (Specialisation) articulates directly with the Graduate Diploma of Nursing (Specialisation), which in turn articulates with the Master in Clinical Nursing (Specialisation).

Domestic students
Cost shouldn’t get in the way of you studying.
If you’re a domestic student, you may be eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place in this course. This means your fees will be subsidised by the Australian Government. You’ll only need to pay the student contribution amount for each unit you study within the course.
You may also be able to defer payment of the student contribution amount by accessing a HECS-HELP loan from the Government. If eligible, you’ll only have to pay your tuition fees once you start earning above a specific amount.
